THOMAS DOERING

My name is Thomas Doering and I was born in 1970 and I am married.

After school I studied electrical engineering and work now as an electronic hardware engineer and electronic system designer.

Due to my technical job everything technical is potentially interesting. This is why I bought a digital compact camera in 2003. It was basically the technical background of digital photography which led me to that step and less photography itself.

Besides making photos of everyone and everything I also tried to make photos of a volleyball match, which is also one of my hobbies. I had to discover that the light conditions in a sports hall cause very noisy photos on a compact camera. The speed of the auto-focus and the long shutter release also made it hard to take good photos.

I thought: “There must be something better”. I began to inform me about other camera types and discovered digital SLR's. So I bought my first ‘real’ camera, a Canon EOS 10D, in the beginning of 2004.

I made myself familiar with this type of camera. And suddenly – I really cannot tell you why – the interest in doing photography of people grew, especially the interest in artistic nude photography.

In the beginning it was hard to find models. With no references and no skills you cannot describe what you want. And even if you know what you want, you have no idea how to do it.
One lucky day I found a girl which agreed in posing for me in lingerie. An other photographer showed me an easy light setup, which I could use for the whole shooting. The setup led to nearly shadow-free pictures.
Already in this shooting I found out that this kind of light setup is very boring. So I began to experiment with different lighting sources, formers and setups.

Since these days I took every opportunity for a shooting and increased my skills with learning-by-doing. The photos became better and better and after some months finding a model was no longer a problem.

I love the reduction on the basic elements of photography: forms, lights and shadows. This is why I only work in a studio. I am often asked if this isn't boring. Well, no, it isn't. It is still amazing what you can do with light if you are able to set it up.
